Nowadays, an increasing number of students seem to
attach less importance to spelling in English learning. Thus, numerous misspellings appear in their papers, and what’s worse, a well-organized essay is cast into the shade.
There are various reasons responsible for this embarrassing situation. For one thing, more and more students give priorities to oral English at the cost of doing less spelling exercises. For another, many teachers put so much emphasis on communication and grammar teaching that they seldom highlight spelling.
To change this situation, I hold to the belief that students and teachers should work together. On the one hand, teachers should pay more attention to spelling teaching, focusing on pronunciation and formation, for example. On the other hand, students should stop complaining about spellings and realize correct spelling should be a must in learning any language. Only via joint efforts can students spell words correctly.
What Electives to Choose
Nowadays, there exist a wide range of selective courses in college which are ready for the undergraduates to choose from. These courses make the students’ college life more colorful. However, as for the purpose of choosing the selective courses, different students have different opinions.
Some students choose more selective courses just to get more knowledge, so that they could be well-prepared for the future job-hunting and find a satisfactory job. Some students just want to extend their interests. Some students believe that the knowledge in the compulsory course textbooks is limited, thus they should choose more courses in order that they can enjoy more colorful college life. And the others have no definite aims but to finish their studies.
As far as I’m concerned, I just want to learn more for my future job and life. And I don’t care about the grade I would have got. I just want to be a man with sharp, vivid and imaginative mind with different knowledge which is not limited to my major. I think more knowledge can make my future life easier and more interesting.
Spring Festival Gala on CCTV
In China, the Spring Festival Gala is performed on CCTV on New Year’s Eve every year. As the most popular annual television event, it has been considered indispensable by all Chinese people for over two decades. People are accustomed to enjoying the grand sight and sound it presents as a feast.
However, there are more and more people claiming to cancel it in recent years. With the roaring development of economy, various mass media come out like the bamboo shoots after spring rain. As a result, more fascinating programs are available in daily life. Moreover, the Spring Festival Gala has remained nearly the same form since it was born, which makes it lose its appeal to youngsters.
As far as I’m concerned, I prefer the program to be kept, because it serves not only as entertainment but an occasion for the families to gather, chat and laugh. Of course it is supposed to be improved to draw attention, by inviting big names. In a word, the Spring Festival Gala is a tradition and treasure of the Chinese people, and we still need it.
Online shopping
Nowadays, with the rapid development of Internet technology, online shopping is coming into fashion, especially among young people.
It goes without saying that online shopping is beneficial to customers and retailers alike in more than one way. For consumers, it is time- and energy-saving to purchase whatever they want on the internet at a much lower price. For retailers, they can save lots of costs that are originally used to rent a store in the downtown and pay employees for less salary compared with traditional market sale. However, despite the many benefits brought by online shopping, there are still some defects that cannot be ignored. For one thing, lack of face-to-face communication makes online shopping less reliable and trustworthy. For another, some merchants with evil motives may provide false information, which makes it time-consuming to identify the commodity.
From my perspective, the benefits of online shopping outweigh its defects, and to refuse to eat for fear of choking is always an unwise choice. One of the effective measures is to carry out relevant laws to regulate the online trading activities. Only when a harmonious internet environment is established can we enjoy the pleasure and convenience of online shopping.
How Should Parents Help Children to Be Independent? It is reasonable that children are always considered as the apple of parents’ eyes, which is particularly true in modern families with an only child. However, many parents go so far as to arrange everything for their children, including their daily life, their studies and even their future.
Parents’ excessive intervention to the things that should be done by the children themselves may result in many negative effects. Firstly, the children become seriously dependent on their parents so that they cannot deal with matters by themselves. Secondly, they cannot understand the hardships of the life and endure the frustration that is inevitable in people’s life. What’s more, when they grow up, they cannot undertake their social responsibilities.
Then, what should parents do? On the one hand, parents should change their thoughts. They should consciously cultivate their children, who are not always little kids, to be independent. On the other hand, parents should trust their children to be able to cope with what they encounter and give necessary guide only at critical moments. Only through the two aspects can the children grow up under a free environment and become independent.
Free Admissions to Museums
Recently, more and more museums are open to the public free of charge so that they can attract more visitors. However, it has also brought some unexpected problems. Should we carry on the practice? People’s views vary from one to another.
Those who are in favor of the policy think museums belong to the public services, and free admissions will provide people, especially those who cannot afford the admission, an access to knowledge. But others might not agree, and they are right in a sense. For one thing, their main concern is the objects exhibited may get damaged more easily. For another, it becomes a huge economic burden for museums to run as usual without any profits from the visitors.
In my opinion, I am absolutely for this practice. The reason lies in the fact that the government should provide more opportunities for citizens to explore and get access to the public knowledge and local culture. Moreover, kids and teenagers can learn more knowledge through vivid ways in museums. I hope all the people can share the same national treasures in more free museums.
Limiting the Use of Disposable Plastic Bags
Recently, limiting the use of disposable plastic bags has been brought to popular attention in China. No one denies that they once gained great popularity in our daily life. However, what would our society be like with the excessive use of them?
In the past few years, there has been a sharp growth in using plastic bags, which has given a rise to such serious problems as environmental pollution. What’s worse, some bags are of poor quality and harmful to our health. In addition, it affects the appearance of the city.
Awareness of the matter in question is one thing, but how to cope with it is another thing. To solve the problem, using disposable plastic bags in supermarkets should be limited strictly. As a result, people come to raise more awareness of environment protection and the running cost in supermarkets is cut down as well. Only in this way can we beautify the city and achieve the sustainable development of our country.
