From childhood's hour I have not been 儿时起，我便与常人不同；

As others were; I have not seen 所见的不是常人所见；

As others saw; I could not bring 不因平常的春天而欣喜。

My passions from a common spring.

From the same source I have not taken 不因常人所伤而悲痛；

My sorrow; I could not awaken 不因同样的曲调而动容；

My heart to joy at the same tone;

Then- in my childhood, in the dawn 在我的童年，破晓之际，

Of a most stormy life- was drawn 不论好坏，我充满风雨的

The mystery which binds me still: 命运的神秘困惑着我：

From the torrent, or the fountain, 如奔流，如喷泉，

From the red cliff of the mountain, 如被山峰环绕的红色悬崖，

From the sun that round me rolled 如秋日里的金色光辉般

In its autumn tint of gold, 围绕着我，困扰着我，

From the lightning in the sky 如夜空中的闪电

As it passed me flying by, 从眼前划过，

From the thunder and the storm, 如响雷，如暴风雨般

And the cloud that took the form 刺激着我，困扰着我。

This poem’s meters are mainly iambic tetrameter and trochaic tetrameter, The poem consists of eleven end rhyming couplets--aa bb cc dd ff gg hh ii jj kk ll. The tone of this poem is somber and dark. This poem used a lot of repetition of the same sentence structure,such as “i” as the implication of how the mystery of

life binds the speaker still. The poet implicated it as the red cliff of the mountain,the sun that round me rolled in its autumn tint of gold etc. And the poet also implicated the form of cloud as a demon, these are all metaphor. It also used some symbolism, such as: the spring symbolized the happiness of common people, and the tone symbolized the ordinary joy. At last, the cloud symbolized the god or the hope.

The word “alone” has two meanings, one is unique ,another is isolated. This word just shows that the speaker of this poem is an unique and isolated person. By the poem, the speaker shows us how he being so different from others and how this mystery of his life confused and troubled him. The speaker cannot have the same feeling in others,he views and experiences things in different way. In his eyes , even the beautiful cloud would be a demon. This poem was written in 1829, when the poet was only 20 years old. The poet had a very sorrowful childhood,his parents died early, his was lonely on his young life. Based on this evidence, we could say that the speaker of this poem is the poet himself. \"Alone\" is a reflection of whom and what Edgar Allen Poe really is.A person’s childhood life do affect his whole life esp. on the side of a person’s psychological development. This poem described a sensitive youth’s confusion about his own unique personality and the reason of his isolation. By this description, the poet wanted to show us his feelings about his pasted life, about his miserable young life.

For me, there are something special in this poem that touch my heart. I feel the same with the speaker in many ways: I feel lonely in my 20s, there is a feeling of isolation. I am a sensitive girl who have few friends, have no warm family

atmosphere. And I also feel that I am an unique one, who disagree with others in many ways. When I saw this poem ,the only thing I thought is the speaker just said something I want to say. At this point,I felt like I am the speaker instead of the reader!

In a summary, this poem is just an autobiography of Poe over a certain period of time. It shows that an unique one always would be the lonely one. Good or ill, the speaker choose to keep his unique even he would be isolated. So do I, I would never give up my unique things which are more precious to me . Like or not, it’s my own decision to be or not to be.
